RELIGIOUS RANDOMNESS RITUALS -- DREIDEL DICE & PAGE BY THE NUMBERS

To test out the Dreidel Dice system, I spun a virtual dreidel 48 times, with every three spins qualifying as a round. The three spins for each of the 16 rounds correlated to four different predetermined hex code colors (with the fourth color representing the combination code of all three spins). In order to illustrate the systems results in a creative manner, I decided to make a 16-piece patchwork painting through ProCreate. I broke down each of the 16 rectangles into four squares, with each of these quadrants colored according to the spin results of each round. The first quadrant featured the first spin's hex code equivalent, the quadrant directly to its right was for the second spin, the third spin was the quadrant below the first and the combination hex code equivalent filled in the last quadrant. In each quadrant, I drew the Hebrew letter(s) that I landed on for each spin/spin combo.

EXPLANATION OF PAGE BY THE NUMBERS SYSTEM & ARTISTIC REPRESENTATION

Unlike the Dreidel Dice system, my Page by the Numbers system was only 81% successful as its numerical inputs were not pre-established. My original goal for the second system was to test out its efficacy 16 times in order to match the first system's 16 possible numerical inputs. This way there would be 16 different hexadecimal color combinations for both systems which I would then incorporate into the 16-piece patchwork paintings. I made two different versions of the second artifact -- the first, atop a dark grey background, numbers each rectangle by round, while the other more aesthetically-pleasing piece is unlined, unnumbered and atop a white background.

For my Page by the Numbers painting, each of the 16 rectangles which represented the 16 rounds were not broken down into four quadrants. Instead of drawing four differently-colored quadrants in each rectangle, I wrote a phrase in the hex code color equivalent determined by the results of each round. Each phrase is determined according to a formula-phrase-color equation, shown above (along with two examples of this equation in action, one from a successful round and the other an unsuccessful round, with success being defined as a result between 0 and 1). The Page by the Numbers system was 81% successful, because 3 out of 16 rounds resulted in numbers larger than 1, so I was unable to match the results to a hex code. To represent these failed rounds within my painting, I wrote these phrases in black (hex code #000000) and then crossed them out.
